Kanichee Mine

Category Exploration Date Status Province / State Country
Mining , , Partially Demolished Ontario Canada

History:

Exploratory mining on this property began before 1920. Among the minerals found here was copper, nickel, gold and silver. Between 1933 and 1936, a shaft would be sunk, and a pilot smelter constructed by Cuniptau Mines Ltd.

Ontario Nickel Corporation would work this property between 1937 and 1948, and Trebor Mines would take over from 1948 to 1949. The Kanichee Mining Corporation would begin working the property in 1973 until 1976 when failing nickel prices would cause its final closure. That same year, the pit was flooded, and operations ceased.

UPDATE - June 7, 2015:
A visit today reveals that one whole structure has been demolished, and the other completely gutted. Nothing much left to see here, folks.

Personal Commentary:

The site is located just north of Temiskaming, and today lies vacant and slowly rotting into the ground. If you happen to be in the area, it's definitely worth a look.

If you're not too concerned about heights, you might even want to try the climb to the top of the silos. The view is well worth it. Watch your step as there are a couple of openings up there, with a rather serious drop.
