Chapleau Hydro

Since I was in the area on a sunny Saturday afternoon, I thought I would check out the town of Chapleau, Ontario.  I had never been here before and the opportunity presented itself.

Immediately as I was driving in, I spotted this tiny generating station beside the road and decided that I would stop for a look on the way out of town.

Holmes Foundry

History: 

Business here began in 1918 as Holmes Blunt Ltd., opened by J.S. Blunt. The foundry manufactured car parts, predominantly engine-casting blocks for Ford.

In 1937, the workers here took part in a sit-down strike. It was shortlived as, 48 hours later, the workers were driven away from the plant by armed and violent hired thugs.

Chatham Incinerator

The first stop on my long-weekend trip was to explore an abandoned garbage incinerator in the town of Chatham, Ontario. There was very little reliable information on the history, when it was built, when it was decommissioned, etc., but it appeared to be an interesting enough place to check out.

Parham Mill

I spotted this place buried under the foliage and stopped in for a look. Almost immediately, however, I was set upon by a ravenous flock of mosquitoes who seemed determined to bleed me dry.

Unfortunately, I didn't stay long.

Wasaga Race Track

History: 

To the best of my knowledge, the track opened in 1956 and closed in 1970. Prior to construction of the car racing track, this same location had a horse-racing track.

The 1960's saw a decline in activity here, tapering continuously until its closure the following year.


Personal Commentary: 

Tyranite Mine

History: 

This mine has apparently had several incarnations over time. The ore body was first staked in 1930 by L.O. Hedlund. Several organizations obtained options to the property over the next few years, but did little with it, and let their options lapse.

Lower Queen Streetcar Station

History: 

This was intended to allow TTC streetcars to run the length of Queen Street, but keep them underground, thereby reducing traffic. It was to run from Trinity Park in the west to Carlaw Avenue in the east.

Digging was already being done for the Queen Subway Station on the Yonge line, so it was decided to excavate the intended streetcar station at the same time.
